(1996)
YES! was inspired by the vibrant energy of a 1995 Rolling Stones concert (in Columbia, SC). The percussion battery includes trap set, and the piece is infused with rhythms found in jazz and rock styles. it was written for Richard Stoltzman who, after the recording session, described it as “an exciting, rhythmically energizing piece with lots of jazz accents and a fun, driving beat.” The composer write: “While much of my music is inspired by Jewish themes, this piece represents my “American” side. It says YES?” to live, which for me is both a Jewish and American Idea.
In advance of the recording, YES! was premiered by Douglas Graham and the South Carolina Philharmonic in 1996, and in a revised version with the University of South Carolina Symphony, 1997.
Funding for this composition and recording was provided in part by a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment fot the Arts.
