Two of Meira’s works, YES!, in a new arrangement for alto sax, piano and drums, along with In Memoriam for solo alto sax will be presented on Sunday, March 17 at 7:30 PM by Gabriel Sánchez-Porras, saxophone and Elizabeth Loparits, piano at University of North Carolina, Wilmington’s Beckwith Recital Hall as part of the Beckwith Recital Series.
Richard Stoltzman said of YES! after his 1997 recording session of the work in Warsaw, “(this) is an exciting, rhythmically energizing piece with lots of jazz accents and a fun, driving beat.”
Meira writes about In Memoriam, “I wrote these sketches during the days of watching the horror of the attacks of September 11: the collapse of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, the plane crash in Pennsylvania. I didn’t have a piece in mind, or consciously set out to write one. But the sketches seemed to belong together, afterwards, and to fit the solo cello. It is my way of holding each other in our loss.”
The concert will also include works by Fernande Decruck, Krisztina Megyeri, Wenxin Li, and Maricel Mendez and will celebrate the voices of these accomplished composers, including the premiere of music commissioned for this occasion.
