Meira’s Mariupol will be performed twice on Sunday, February 26 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, located at 2701 Heyward St. in Columbia, SC.
The first performance will be after Ashes to Ashes, the 11 AM to noon service that day, the subject of which will be the war in Ukraine, focusing on the impact of war on people’s understanding of their humanity and mortality. Pianist and UUCC Music Director Dr. Anna Hamilton will present the work.
She’ll also perform Mariupol later that day as part of the 7 PM An Enchanting Musical Evening fundraiser concert for the UUCC Partner Church in Beszterce, Romania, featuring pianists Dr. Hamilton and Richard McLeod and violist Karen Peters playing works by Granados, Bartok, Chaminade, Ravel and Warshauer. A suggested donation of $25 will support the UUCC partner church in Beszterce, Romania. Light refreshments to follow the concert event.
Meira says about the work, “It is dedicated to the people of Ukraine. The title, “Mariupol” is in honor of the sacrifices and trauma this Ukrainian city has endured during the Russian aggression.”
