Meira’s Shabbat with King David will be performed on September 25 by the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Robert Franz, Music Director, at the Jewish Community Centre, 1641 Ouellette Ave. in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
This program was created by Music Director Robert Franz with the assistance of JCC Executive Director Jay Katz to celebrate the music of Jewish composers and Windsor’s Jewish community. It will also include works by Mendelssohn, Gershwin and Richard Rodgers.
Meira writes, “Shabbat with King David combines two melodies: a pentatonic melody on D and an e-minor melody. I associate the pentatonic melody with the biblical King David and his ecstatic dancing when bringing the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem…This composition for string orchestra was commissioned by the Richland School District II Orchestra, Pamela Hayes, Director, Columbia, SC, for its performance in Carnegie Hall, June 15, 1997.” Read more about it here.
In February, 2013, the WSO announced the appointment of Maestro Robert Franz as its sixth Music Director. Franz began in September, 2013, leading a season that garnered praise from the media and public alike. The Orchestra now reaches more listeners than in any time in its 70 year history. Their commitment to excellence and consistent emphasis on education and community outreach have galvanized a new generation of music lovers in Windsor, Ontario.
