Meira’s In Memoriam will be performed by cellist Velleda Miragias as part of the 10th Annual Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence, on December 7 at St. Marks’ Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The event will also be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/watch/NewtownActionAlliance/.
Each year since 2013, the Newtown Action Alliance Foundation (NAAF), the charitable arm of the Newtown Action Alliance (NAA), and numerous partners in the gun violence prevention community have sponsored the National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence on or near the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy. These multidenominational events, held in Washington, D.C., at the National Cathedral and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, bring together survivors of gun violence, victims’ family members, concerned citizens, faith leaders, lawmakers, leaders of gun violence prevention organizations, and activists from across the nation.
Meira writes, “I wrote these sketches during the days of watching the horror of the attacks of September 11: the collapse of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, the plane crash in Pennsylvania…I didn’t have a piece in mind, or consciously set out to write one. But the sketches seemed to belong together, afterwards, and to fit the solo cello. It is my way of holding each other in our loss.”
