Meira’s Elijah’s Violin will be broadcast online on Sunday, June 13, 2021 @ 4 PM PDT. The performance is from September 15, 2019 at the Interfaith Center at the Presidio Chapel, 130 Fisher Loop in San Francisco, CA.
The semi-staged performance of the one act family opera-in-progress was presented by the Interfaith Center at the Presidio in San Francisco as part of a series of operas representing different faith traditions in 2019-2020.
Elijah’s Violin was adapted by Meira Warshauer from the Egyptian, oral tradition story, re-told by Howard Schwarz in his collection, Elijah’s Violin and other Jewish Fairy Tales. The story, with a libretto by Susan Levi Wallach and Meira Warshauer, features a magical violin which releases the imprisoned melodies of the heart.
Performers included Sergio Gonzalez as Prince Raphael, Mariya Kaganskaya (Tania Mandzy Inala, covering) as Auntie Malka, Jacqueline Kerns (Marina Davis, covering) as Princess Shulamit, Alize Rozsnyai (Rachel Beninghof, covering) as Zohara and Chung-Wai Soong as Elijah/Mycologist, along with the Cantabile Youth Singers, violinist Terrie Baune, flutist Stacey Pelinka, cellist Natalie Raney, and pianist/coach Jason Sherbundy. Jonathan Khuner will be Music Director, Ofer dal Lal, Chorus Master, with stage direction by Yefim Maizel.
